04-21: Churches and the Pope

We had another day of wandering about, though we did have a few destinations in mind.

Breakfast at Giselda bakery near Mia and Natan's Airbnb

Tile floor in Basilica of Santa Maria in Aracoeli. This is a church I had been to before, though the churches are so packed with art and there is so much to see so it is never a problem returning.

I loved this graffiti

Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore (also one I had been to before)

These are some of the oldest and best preserved mosaics in Rome.

More really nice tiled floor

Santa Maria degli angeli e dei Martiri (my favorite church, and now Mia's as well)

Sant'Ignazio church (the 4th church today that I had already been to)

Great ceiling!

Chiesa di Antonio dei Portoghesi (new church - #25 in Rome)

Walk along the Tiber River

After news of the Pope's death, we decided to end the day at the Vatican. I don't know if it was because we arrived after closing, or if it was due to the death of the Pope, but the gates were open. We were able to get much closer. There were a lot of people, but not so many as on my previous walks past the Vatican. We didn't notice any different behavior from the people - no one crying or pulling at their hair. If we hadn't seen the news we wouldn't have known anything was different about today.
