April 27th-29th: Leaving Seattle, Arriving in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

From April 27th through May 25th, the Evergreen School went on it's 8th trip to Vietnam. Due to new school policies, as an employee of Evergreen School, I am not allowed to have a personal blog during the time of the trip, but can submit photos and narration to The Evergreen School's web site. Below is an edited version of those submissions, without photos or names of individual students.

April 27th-29th: Leaving Seattle, Arriving in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
After 20 hours in transit, we arrived at our hotel shortly after midnight on April 29th.
My favorite quote: 10 hours after leaving Seattle, and still on route to Seoul, Korea, Chloe said to me, "The plane ride is my favorite part of the trip so far."
Favorite game: Eli taught a group of students the game, "say a vegetable without showing your teeth." This kept us amused for a while.

Beginning of the trip lesson/meditation: Appreciate each moment
Breath in, breath out
Pay attention to your breath
What an amazing thing it is
Without even noticing it, the breath fills our lungs
And oxygenates our blood
All without our active engagement
Without our appreciation

Life is like that
There is so much that nourishes us, supports us, protects us
Without us even noticing it.

Maybe we should.
Breath in, breath out
Show gratitude for each breath

The trip will start slowly.
Your senses will be so overwhelmed that the first full day will feel like a week
And then before you know it, the first week is gone
Then the halfway point, and then we are heading home

And so the issue every year is: how do we slow it down
I believe it is by paying attention
Your senses can’t help it but be engaged
It is up to you to consciously pay attention.

There are opportunities everywhere
Pay attention
Appreciate
Show gratitude
Before you know it, the time is gone
Make the most of the time you have
You will have choices.
Choose wisely.
