May 14th: pen pal school

Incredible Day with Our Pen Pals! (from Lindsey, the 3rd trip leader)

Today, we visited our pen pal school and had an incredible experience! We started the day with greetings and exchanging gifts. Evergreen 8th graders brought Evergreen Frisbees and t-shirts, as well as things like Sounders caps, picture books of Seattle, and stickers and pens. The Bat Trang students gave our students lovely gifts like pottery trinkets (the village specialty!), cute notebooks, and shuttlecocks.

Next, we had a mini talent show! We broke out ukuleles, and Bat Trang students sang for us. This was followed by a huge range of games: bash-the-pot (like a piñata but with crockery), wobbly-bamboo-balance-beam, tug-of-war, bike riding in the school courtyard, and of course Frisbee!

We ate a giant lunch together, then visited a pottery school to learn the traditional village specialty. Our skills were somewhat lacking. :-) We finished the day with time for small groups of Evergreen and Bat Trang students to explore the village together, then parted ways with our fantastic new friends!

Tomorrow, we have one last day in Hanoi, then depart on the night train to the rural northwest of Vietnam in Sapa!
